The walk from Bournemouth Pier to Boscombe Pier is a straightforward way to see more of the bay without committing to a long coastal hike. Follow the lower promenade east, stop at Boscombe and return the same way. The beach, rather than a complicated set of turns, stays alongside you throughout.

At a glance

Distance About 1.5 miles / 2.4km each way; around 3 miles / 4.8km return
Suggested time Allow 1½–2 hours for the return outing with pauses
Route Lower seafront promenade between the two piers
Terrain Paved seafront; avoid adding cliff climbs unless planned

Start at Pier Approach

Find the landward entrance to Bournemouth Pier and turn east onto the seafront promenade. You do not need to enter the pier or buy an attraction ticket for the walking route. The Lower Gardens provide a useful approach from the town centre. If you have parked on a clifftop, remember that getting down to the start and back up afterwards is additional to the promenade walk.

Keep the sea on your right heading east

Follow the lower paved route beneath the East Cliff, with the water on your right as you head towards Boscombe. Stay on the promenade rather than climbing a zig-zag path or choosing a beach shortcut. Sand can blow onto the paving, and busy days bring walkers, runners and other permitted users close together. Look ahead and leave space around beach access points.

Take a break at Boscombe Pier

Boscombe Pier is a clear endpoint, with the seafront and its refreshment options nearby. The official pier listing highlights musical instruments along the pier, but check access and opening before treating that as guaranteed entertainment. The pier-to-pier distance is approximately 1.5 miles each way. Return along the same promenade for the simplest plan; a clifftop return or a wander through the Chine Gardens changes the gradients and distance.

Access, toilets and dogs

The lower promenade is the gentler route, but confirm the approach from your arrival point if you need step-free access. Bournemouth Pier’s visitor information lists a disabled toilet on its east side, while other seafront facilities have their own opening arrangements. Dogs must be on leads along the promenade and piers, with summer restrictions on designated beach sections. Check the council map before taking a dog down onto the sand.

Transport and a workable return

The pier operator describes Bournemouth station as about 1.1 miles from Pier Approach, roughly a 25-minute walk, with local buses as another option. Drivers should check BCP Council’s car-park information and allow for the walk to the start. A land train is a possible seasonal extra, but do not depend on it without checking the timetable. Bring water and a windproof layer, and make the decision to return before everyone is tired. The map marks the start; the written route follows the shore to Boscombe.
